Very long skirts, or maxi skirts, are a trend that can totally be seen as frumpy but they could also be the look that is so cool and effortless. They would make petite frames look taller (ps. you don't have to wear heels in these). Wear them with tank-tops and simple sandals. Then you'll absolutely look pretty (and flattering)!

Dress For Your Body Shape

Hourglass Figure

Lucky you! This is known as the perfect body shape. You have an hourglass figure if; your full hip-line and chest-line are in the same width and your waist is well defined. Your upper body length is almost the same with the lower body length. Your aims are to emphasize your curves, especially your waist, without ‘adding’ your weight.

Do’s:
  • Wear fitted and semi-fitted clothes
  • Dresses with defined waistlines
  • Straight and gently light pants
  • Low to medium-low necklines
Don’ts:
  • Baggy styles are a big no!
  • Too skinny pants
  • High necklines (unless you have a small bust)
  • Skirts with open pleats
Kelly Brook
Katherine Heigl

Inverted Triangle

You have an inverted triangle body shape if; you have a proportionally large bust, or you have broad shoulders, or both. You also have narrow hips with well defined waist. Your aims are to create the illusion of the perfect hourglass body shape by balancing your lower body to your upper body and to draw attention away from your upper body.

Do’s:
  • Tops and dresses that flow through the waist
  • Flared (light-colored) pants
  • A-line skirts
  • Fitted sleeves
Don’ts:
  • Skinny pants and fitted skirts
  • Styles that emphasize your shoulder (puff shoulder, padded shoulder)
  • Big collars
  • Stiff and thick fabrics
Left to Right: Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Gwyneth Paltrow

Triangle or Pear-Shaped

You have this shape if; your chest-line is proportionally narrower than your hip-line and your waist is well defined. You have narrow shoulders, larger thighs and full rounded bottom.

Do’s:
  • Tops that emphasize your shoulder (puff shoulder, padded shoulder)
  • Skirts and dresses that are straight or slightly flared (light colors)
  • Lower and wider necklines
  • Straight-legged jeans with dark color

Don’ts:
  • ‘Body-hugging’ tight skirts and skinny jeans
  • Tight jeans with too much details on the hips or bottom (flaps or embroidery on back pockets, large side pockets)
  • High-waisted pants (or shorts) and skirts
  • Flashy belts
Alicia Keys
Kristen Davis

Rectangle
You have a rectangle body shape if; your full chest-line and hip-line are about the same width and your waist is little defined. Your legs and arms will typically be proportionally slender. Your aims are to add curves by defining your shoulders or if you are slender, by defining your waist.

Do’s:
  • Tops that emphasize your shoulder (puffy, padded shoulder)
  • Semi fitted clothes
  • Short sleeves and sleeve-less tops and dresses
  • Medium necklines (V-neck would be great)

Don’ts:
  • Baggy tops and pants
  • Too-fitted clothes
  • Narrow skirts
  • Straight cut jeans (this will only emphasize your straight figure

Hair Styles That Fit Your Face Shape

Oval
Try: A variety of styles. Just about any hair shape looks good on you. Your "perfect" features allow you to wear a wider range of styles than any other face shape. Have you ever noticed the majority of models fall into this shape? Have you noticed how many different hair styles they can wear?

You can wear short, medium and long hair styles. Your face shape is well "balanced", or in even proportion. You will look best when styling your hair off your face. Most oval face shapes can wear slicked-backed looks as well.

Avoid: Hair styles that cover up your "perfect" features with heavy bangs, or too forward-directed styles. In wearing your hair style on your face, you'll lose your face shape behind the hair. This may appear to add weight to your face.

Cameron Diaz: Long side-swept bangs
Tyra Banks: Big Curls

Round
Try: Hair styles with fullness and height at the crown. Off center parts help reduce the roundness. Short hair styles with a swept-back direction or hair styles that are longer than chin length. By layering the top to achieve fullness and keeping the rest of the cut relatively close to the face, your round face shape will appear longer and narrower.

Avoid: Chin length hair with a rounded line that mirrors face’s round shape. Center parts tend to accentuate roundness. Also avoid too short hairstyles, or straight "chopped" bangs.  A rounded haircut ending at the chin will certainly add weight to your round face shape. Because the widest part of your face is at the cheeks and ears, you need to avoid having the fullness of the cut here, as it will make your face appear wider.

Kate Winslet: Long & Curly
Charlize Theron: Side-swept & just below the chin

Square
Try: Short-to-medium length hair, especially with wave or roundness around the face. Wispy bangs will soften the angular shape. Off-center parts with height at the crown look great on square faces.Height at the crown will elongate your symmetrical shape. If your hair is straight, you may want to consider a body wave, as some curl or wave to the hair will achieve a nice balance to the straight features of your face shape.

Avoid: Long straight styles that accentuate the square jawbone. "Linear" straight bangs or center parts aren't the best choice. A straight bob ending at the jaw line is the wrong thing to do for your face shape.Make sure in styling that you achieve some roundness to the shape and some height at the crown or bangs, and you will be on the right track.

Sandra Bullock: Long side-swept bangs
Demi Moore: Long & Curly

Heart
Try: Chin-length or longer styles work well with a heart shaped face. Other styles to try: side-parted hair styles or swept-forward layers around the upper face, with gently wispy bangs. This creates a balanced look by giving fullness where you need it. You can wear shorter styles; however, if you are a dramatic heart shape you need to leave weight in the back nape area. This will achieve more balance between your dramatic cheekbones and more narrow chin.

Avoid: Short, full styles that emphasize the upper face. Stay away from styles with too much height at the crown. If you are a dramatic heart shape, the short, full styles with tapered necklines, which emphasize the upper face will make you look top heavy. Too much height at the crown will give the appearance of a longer and narrower chin.

Reese Witherspoon: Side-parted hairstyle

Jennifer Love Hewitt: Chin-length & Side-swept

Braided Hairstyles

Braids have graduated from little girl pigtails into a trendy hairstyle accent that can add a bit of whimsy to casual looks, or romance to black-tie tresses. Celebrities are dressing up their updos with delicate braided halos and leaving their long 'messy' hair with wreath-like headbands.

Having a lunch date with your lovely boyfriend? Try a different look by adding a plaited headband on top and leaving your long hair looks kinda messy.

Zooey Deschanel adds a plaited headband on top to glam up her blunt bangs and wavy hair.

  1. Start with large waves through your length and smooth roots
  2. Brush your bangs straight down, or if you don't have any bangs, separate your front hair into two, and bring each to different sides.
  3. Take one inch section of your hair from above and slightly behind your ear and create a classic three-strand braid.
  4. Repeat on the other side
  5. Bring each braid up and over the top, cross each other on top and back down the other side, pinning the ends in.
  6. Mist with hairspray to set your style

Going to a party or some night events? Then this updo is the perfect choice for you to keep a casual but sexy look.
Kristen Stewart's casual loose updo features a casual braid detail across the front.

  1. Mist damp hair with texturizing spray and then blow dry carelessly/randomly while shaking your fingers.
  2. Create a messy center part.
  3. Take a three-inch wide section from one side and create a classic three-strand braid. Pin into place.
  4. Gather your hair into a loose updo, leaving a few strands to fall freely in front.
  5. Spritz with shine spray for added luster and hairspray to hold your updo.
